Omoda 5 (Chery Omoda 5) – A Bold Step Forward in Compact SUV Design

The Omoda 5, also known as the Chery Omoda 5, is one of the most distinctive compact SUVs on the market today. It’s bold, futuristic, and packed with technology, aiming to stand out in one of the most competitive car segments.

In this detailed review, we’ll explore its engine options, driving feel, interior quality, features, and practicality. Engine and Powertrain

Depending on the market, the Omoda 5 comes with two petrol engine choices, and an all-electric version is expected in the near future.

  • 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine – This version produces around 108 kW (147 hp) and 210 Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It’s smooth, quiet, and efficient for everyday city and highway driving.

  • 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine – This more powerful option offers up to 137 kW (185 hp) and 275 Nm of torque, coupled with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). It delivers stronger acceleration and a more dynamic feel.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but some markets offer an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option for extra stability in poor weather or light off-road use.

Acceleration is respectable for its class, and the car feels light and responsive in urban environments. The 1.6T version especially gives the Omoda 5 some punch when overtaking or merging onto highways.

Fuel Consumption and Performance

The Omoda 5 isn’t just about looks — it performs well for a compact SUV, maintaining a solid balance between performance and efficiency.

Average fuel consumption sits around 7.2–7.5 L/100 km, depending on the engine and driving conditions. It’s not the most economical SUV, but considering its turbo power and size, it’s a reasonable figure.

The dual-clutch gearbox shifts quickly when on the move, though it can sometimes hesitate slightly when starting from a standstill. Ride comfort is tuned more toward softness than sportiness, making it ideal for daily use, family trips, or long motorway journeys.

Dimensions and Practicality

The Omoda 5 falls right in the middle of the compact SUV segment, offering a practical footprint that’s easy to park but still roomy inside.

The design is sleek and sporty, with bold creases, sharp lines, and a distinctive front grille that gives it a futuristic look. Despite its style-first approach, the Omoda 5 still delivers good practicality, including decent cabin storage and flexible rear seating.

Interior, Comfort & Technology

Inside, the Omoda 5 feels surprisingly premium for its price point. Chery has done an impressive job blending modern design with a tech-focused layout.

You’re greeted by a dual-screen setup, typically featuring two large 12.3-inch displays — one for the digital driver cluster and one for infotainment. The interface supports smartphone integration, navigation, voice control, and customizable driving modes.

The materials used are soft-touch in key areas, with leatherette finishes available on higher trims. Ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, and heated front seats add to the upscale feel.

The seats are well-contoured, offering a comfortable driving position with good visibility. Rear-seat space is adequate for adults, and folding the backrests expands the cargo area for extra versatility.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is one of the strongest aspects of the Omoda 5. It comes with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, many of which are standard across trims.

Key features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Lane-keeping assist

  • Blind-spot monitoring

  • Rear cross-traffic alert

  • Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking

  • 360° surround-view camera system

These systems combine to make the Omoda 5 not just comfortable but genuinely reassuring to drive. Its advanced radar and camera setup perform well in busy city traffic and highway cruising alike.

Driving Experience

The Omoda 5’s driving character leans toward comfort and refinement. Steering is light and easy to handle in city traffic, while the suspension absorbs bumps effectively. The car’s quiet cabin and stable ride make it a pleasant companion for long drives.

The 1.6T version, with its extra power and dual-clutch gearbox, feels livelier and more engaging, offering good torque delivery and smooth performance at higher speeds.

While it’s not a performance SUV, the Omoda 5 strikes a confident balance — agile enough for tight corners, but calm and composed when cruising.

Design and Exterior Styling

From the outside, the Omoda 5 stands out immediately. Its design blends sporty aggression with futuristic elegance. The diamond-patterned front grille, slim LED headlights, and coupe-like rear end make it one of the most eye-catching vehicles in its class.

The bold styling continues with two-tone paint options, aerodynamic accents, and stylish alloy wheels. It’s clear that Chery aimed for a design that turns heads — and succeeded.
