Rowan Atkinson may be best known for Mr Bean’s wide-eyed antics and Blackadder’s razor-sharp wit, but behind the scenes, he’s also cultivated one of Britain’s most fascinating private car collections. Unlike many celebrity collectors, Atkinson’s garage isn’t just a lineup of flashy exotics — it’s a carefully chosen stable of machines that blend rarity, history, engineering brilliance, and, sometimes, unforgettable crashes.


The Enthusiast, Not Just the Owner

What makes Atkinson stand out is that he isn’t a passive collector. He’s raced cars, modified them, crashed them (several times), and repaired them at enormous cost. McLaren F1 (1997)

Perhaps the jewel in his collection, Atkinson bought this legendary supercar new in 1997 for about £640,000. Powered by a BMW-engineered V12 and capable of nearly 240 mph, the McLaren F1 remains one of the most iconic cars ever built. Atkinson famously used his for everything from track days to school runs. He also crashed it twice — once into the back of a Rover, and later in a high-speed accident with a tree. The second crash led to a repair bill of nearly £1 million, believed to be one of the largest private insurance payouts in the UK. Despite this, he eventually sold the car in 2015 for around £8 million.

Aston Martin V8 Zagato (1986)

A rare, hand-crafted Aston Martin with bodywork by Zagato, Atkinson owned and raced this car, even modifying it for performance. Unfortunately, it also met its end on a track day crash, a recurring theme in his motoring adventures.

Land Rover Defender Heritage Edition (2015, “110”)

Not all his cars are exotic supercars. This Defender, part of a limited Heritage Edition run, reflects his appreciation for utilitarian engineering. With its long wheelbase and classic styling, it represents the other side of Atkinson’s tastes — practical, rugged, and iconic.

Lancia HF Integrale Evoluzione II (1993)

A rally legend, this Lancia is celebrated for its motorsport heritage and boxy charisma. Atkinson owned a well-kept example, a car cherished by enthusiasts worldwide for its performance and pedigree.


Crashes, Repairs & Lessons

One defining aspect of Atkinson’s story as a car collector is his willingness to drive his machines as they were meant to be driven — and to pay the price when things go wrong. His McLaren F1 crash into a tree became front-page news and highlighted just how expensive such dedication can be. Yet, it also proved that passion for driving often outweighs financial risk.


Value of the Collection

Estimates suggest that Atkinson’s collection has been worth between $15–25 million at different points, depending on which cars were in his stable. Some, like the McLaren F1, massively appreciated in value, while others were sold at auction for sums well above their original price.
