MG3 Review (UK): Models, Engines, Performance, MPG and Practicality
The MG3 has become one of the most talked-about superminis in the UK thanks to its sharp pricing, generous equipment levels, and MG’s rapidly improving reputation for value and reliability. Designed to compete with cars like the Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, and Hyundai i20, the MG3 offers a youthful design, modern technology, and impressive running costs – particularly in its latest hybrid form.

MG3 Models in the UK
MG3 Petrol (Earlier Generation)
Before the introduction of the hybrid, the MG3 was sold in the UK with a simple petrol setup aimed at affordability and low ownership costs.
Common UK trims included:
- MG3 Excite
- MG3 Exclusive
These models focused on value, offering features such as touchscreen infotainment, Apple CarPlay, air conditioning, and sporty styling at a very competitive price point.
MG3 Hybrid+ (Current Generation)
The MG3 Hybrid+ represents a major step forward and is now the main MG3 offering in the UK. It uses advanced hybrid technology similar in concept to Toyota’s system but at a significantly lower price.
UK trims typically include:
- MG3 SE Hybrid+
- MG3 Trophy Hybrid+
The Trophy trim adds sportier styling, larger alloy wheels, upgraded interior materials, and additional driver-assistance features.
Engines and Performance
MG3 Petrol Engine (Previous Model)
- Engine: 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol
- Power: approx. 106 bhp
- Torque: around 137 Nm
- 0–62 mph: approx. 10.4 seconds
- Top Speed: around 108 mph
This engine was not designed to be fast, but it was reliable, easy to maintain, and perfectly adequate for city driving and occasional motorway use.
MG3 Hybrid+ Engine (Current Model)
- Engine: 1.5-litre petrol + electric motor
- Total Power Output: approx. 194 bhp
- Transmission: Automatic (hybrid e-CVT style)
- 0–62 mph: approx. 8.0 seconds
- Top Speed: around 106 mph
Despite being a small hatchback, the MG3 Hybrid+ is one of the most powerful cars in its class. The instant torque from the electric motor makes it feel lively in urban driving, while the petrol engine provides strong performance at higher speeds.
Fuel Consumption (UK MPG)
Fuel efficiency is one of the MG3’s strongest selling points, especially in the hybrid version.
MG3 Petrol MPG
- Combined MPG: approx. 46–48 mpg (UK)
- Urban driving: mid-40s mpg
- Motorway driving: low-50s mpg if driven gently
MG3 Hybrid+ MPG
- Official combined figure: up to 64 mpg (UK)
- Real-world driving: typically 55–60 mpg (UK)
- City driving: can exceed 65 mpg thanks to electric-only operation at low speeds
For UK drivers dealing with rising fuel prices, the hybrid MG3 offers excellent efficiency without the need to plug in.
Interior, Technology and Comfort
Inside, the MG3 has made noticeable improvements over older models. The cabin design is modern and clean, with:
